Lokimaps imports standard GPX tracks, routes, and waypoints. Imported items appear under Bookmarks, where you can organise them into folders and choose whether they are visible on the map.

GPX stands for GPS Exchange Format. A GPX file stores geographic coordinates as waypoints, routes, and tracks, and may also include details such as elevations and timestamps. It is used to transfer outdoor and GPS data between compatible apps and devices, but visual styling and app-specific features may not transfer.

  1. Open Bookmarks .
  2. Open the Actions menu and choose Import GPX .
  3. Select one .gpx file in the iOS file picker.
  4. Review the tracks, routes, and bookmarks found in the file.
  5. Choose Import into to select a destination folder.
  6. Turn Show imported items on map on or off, then select Import n, where n is the number of items to import.

You can also open a GPX file from Files, Mail, or another app and choose Lokimaps from the iOS share or open-in options.

Duplicate preventionDuplicate prevention

By default, Lokimaps skips items that match anything already in Bookmarks or an earlier item in the same file. If matches are found, the preview shows a duplicate notice and labels each matching row. The Import n button shows how many items will be imported based on your choice. The duplicate controls do not appear if no matches are found. Lokimaps checks again when you start the import. Existing items that are skipped keep their current folder, map visibility, colours, and Route Planner editing data, even if you choose a different destination folder.

Matching uses the item type, name, and coordinates. Routes must have the same complete sequence of points. Tracks must also have matching recording times and gaps. If an imported track includes elevation data, it must match too. Coordinate rounding during GPX export does not prevent a match, but nearby places and different recordings remain separate. Tracks without recording times are normally treated as new unless they have a matching item identifier from an earlier Lokimaps export.

Keep duplicates as copies imports each highlighted match as an intentional copy. Other new items are imported normally, and the intentional copies remain separate during iCloud sync.

  1. Open a bookmark, saved route, or recorded track under Bookmarks.
  2. Choose Share GPX .
  3. Use the iOS share sheet to save the file, send it, or open it in another compatible app.

GPX exports can contain sensitive location history, timestamps, elevations, and folder names. Review what the file contains and who will receive it before sharing.

  1. Open the folder under Bookmarks. To export everything, stay at the top level.
  2. Open the Actions menu.
  3. Choose Share as GPX .
  4. Select a destination in the iOS share sheet.

A folder export includes supported bookmarks, saved routes, and tracks inside that folder and its subfolders. Lokimaps adds folder-path information to its own GPX exports so that structure can be restored when the file is imported back into Lokimaps. Exports also include an optional Lokimaps item identifier to help match future imports. The identifier is only a matching hint: it never allows an imported file to overwrite or update an existing item. Other apps may ignore these optional extensions.

GPX is an exchange format with many vendor-specific extensions. Lokimaps imports standard waypoints, routes, tracks, names, timestamps, route-point and track-point elevations, and track segments when present, but app-specific styling or proprietary data may not transfer. Imported and older routes normally do not contain Lokimaps Route Planner waypoints or routing-mode data, so Edit in Route Planner is not offered for them.
