Lokimaps separates cartography into maps and layers. A map is the base you navigate on. A layer adds information above that base, such as property boundaries, hunting areas, or public geographic data from a custom service.
Maps, layers, and your collectionMaps, layers, and your collection
The Maps screen contains two collections:
- Maps contains base maps. At least one base map is selected so there is always cartography behind your routes, bookmarks, and tools.
- Layers contains optional overlays. You can show any number of compatible layers above the selected map.
Adding an item puts it in your collection. Selecting it controls whether it is currently visible. Hiding an item does not remove it from the collection or delete its settings.
Switch the visible mapSwitch the visible map
- Select the Maps control in the lower-left group of map controls.
- Under Maps, select a map name to show that map by itself.
- Pan and zoom to check its coverage and level of detail.
- Open the Actions menu beside a map for its description, preview, download actions, or other available settings.
Road map, Satellite, nautical charts, Historic maps, Topo (Worldwide), and custom sources configured as base maps are designed to be shown alone.
Combine compatible country mapsCombine compatible country maps
The Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish Topo maps, plus Finnish Aerial imagery, can be selected together with compatible country maps. Lokimaps clips them at national borders so a journey across the Nordics can use the best available map on each side.
- Open Maps from the map controls.
- Use the selection circle at the left of each compatible map to select the maps you want together.
- Move across a national border to confirm the transition.
If a map is exclusive, selecting it replaces the current base-map combination. Lokimaps shows the appropriate selection control for each map.
Show overlay layersShow overlay layers
- Open Maps from the map controls and scroll to Layers.
- Select a layer to show it above the base map.
- Select it again to hide it.
- Use the layer's Actions menu to view details or edit settings when available.
Layers can have their own coverage and zoom limits. A selected layer may appear blank when the map is outside its area, zoomed too far out, or waiting for an online service.
Add and organise itemsAdd and organise items
Select Add map or Add layer to browse items that are not yet in your collection. Built-in items include a description, coverage, provider, access status, and preview where available. Items marked PRO require Lokimaps PRO.
Use the collection's editing controls to reorder or remove items. Removing a built-in item only removes it from your collection, so it can be added again later. Removing a custom map or layer also deletes its saved configuration and local cache from the device.
Choose the right guideChoose the right guide
- Browse every built-in map and native layer for coverage, providers, access, combination rules, and offline support.
- Download a supported map area before leaving mobile coverage.
- Add a custom WMS, WMTS, or WFS source manually when you already know the provider or service URL.
- Find a compatible map or layer with Layer AI when you know what information you want but not where to get it.
- Add and manage an Oma riista hunting area when you have an area identifier from Oma riista.
For trip planning, select and test the map first, then verify any overlays at the zoom levels and locations where you expect to use them.
