Topo (Norway) in Lokimaps displays Kartverket's official Turkart WMTS layer, whose service identifier is toporaster. Kartverket documents this exact layer as a multiscale raster containing N50 through N2000 map bases plus N5. It is not one paper map enlarged across every zoom level.

There is therefore no one visual key that describes every Lokimaps zoom level. Kartverket's official cache-service overview identifies the layer, and its service-structure description identifies the map bases it combines. For the detailed N50 part, use Kartverket's current N50 cartography register, which links to the full screen-cartography specification and a digital symbol viewer. An N50 symbol is not automatically the right key for an N250, N1000, N2000, or N5 view.

At close zoom levels, the map can show small roads, paths, buildings, streams, height details, and local names. Wider views use progressively generalized map bases. Minor objects disappear, lines may be simplified, and a category may be drawn differently so that the map remains readable.

Always inspect important terrain at the intended travel zoom. If a symbol changes or disappears, interpret it using the legend for the current map basis rather than assuming the underlying feature has changed.

At the closest app zoom levels, Lokimaps enlarges the most detailed tile supplied by this layer. Enlarged lines and labels do not add survey detail or turn N50 cartography into a larger-scale map.

Contours, heights, and steep terrainContours, heights, and steep terrain

Contour lines connect equal elevations. Closely spaced lines indicate steep ground, and widely spaced lines indicate a gentler slope. Index, ordinary, and auxiliary contours use different emphasis. The official screen specification uses brown for terrain contours and blue for contours on glaciers, but the interval and amount of detail depend on scale.

Spot heights, cliffs, exposed rock, scree or boulder areas, depressions, and other landform symbols add information that contour spacing alone cannot show. Do not treat a blank slope as flat, especially at a wider zoom where small features have been generalized away.

Paths, tracks, and roadsPaths, tracks, and roads

The cartography distinguishes road classes, local and private roads, tractor roads, paths, marked trails, railways, tunnels, bridges, ferries, and other transport structures. In the detailed screen specification, marked and unmarked paths use distinct red line patterns. A marked trail is emphasized differently from a thinner unmarked path, and close-scale tractor-road information is separate again.

The symbol describes a mapped class, not the current condition. It does not guarantee a right of vehicle access, winter maintenance, a visible trail, an intact bridge, or safe passage. Where two red or dashed lines are easy to confuse, compare them in the N50 digital legend before planning around them.

Water, marsh, snow, and glaciersWater, marsh, snow, and glaciers

Blue is used for lakes, rivers, streams, shorelines, and related water features. Different line styles separate a stream from a ditch or another narrow watercourse. Rapids, waterfalls, dams, springs, and crossings have their own symbols.

Marsh is shown with blue line patterns over the underlying terrain. Snowfields and glaciers have separate fills, and glacier contours are distinguished from land contours. These symbols describe mapped features, not live water levels, snow bridges, ice strength, seasonal flooding, or how difficult the surface will be to cross.

Land cover and built featuresLand cover and built features

Area fills differentiate forest, open ground, cultivated land, marsh, built-up areas, bare rock, snow, and water. Generalization is especially noticeable here: an individual patch at close zoom may become part of a broader land-cover area at wider zoom.

Buildings range from individual structures at detailed scales to generalized settlement areas at smaller scales. Other symbols identify churches, cabins, towers, masts, power lines, industrial sites, and prominent landmarks. A cabin or service symbol does not confirm that the place is open, staffed, unlocked, or equipped.

Kartverket's base datasets include administrative areas and restriction areas as separate themes. Different line or area styles can represent the national boundary, other administrative divisions, protected areas, military or other restricted land, and facility limits.

Do not confuse a boundary with a path. Follow the line pattern and labels, then check the current rules with the responsible authority. Temporary closures, avalanche warnings, hunting activity, and local access decisions are not comprehensively represented on the static topographic map.

  1. Zoom in until the feature and nearby labels are clear.
  2. Classify it broadly as terrain, water, transport, building, or boundary information.
  3. For a feature drawn in the detailed N50 part of the layer, open Kartverket's current N50 cartography entry and use Vis digital kartografi for a searchable visual key.
  4. If you are looking at a wide regional view, remember that the N50 symbol may have been simplified or omitted by a smaller-scale map base.
  5. Verify critical access, weather, avalanche, trail, bridge, and cabin information with a current specialist source.

The map is excellent for understanding terrain and finding mapped routes, but a symbol should always be combined with scale, surrounding contours, and current field information.
