Topo (Sweden) in Lokimaps uses the colour Web Mercator edition (Farg_05m_mercator) of Lantmäteriet's downloadable Topografisk webbkarta raster. Lokimaps serves a synchronized copy of that raster as tiles rather than requesting Lantmäteriet's live map service. Lantmäteriet publishes a bilingual Swedish and English legend for the map. The current legend is version 2.13, dated 27 May 2026.
This guide groups the symbols by what they tell you in the field, with extra attention to the mountain and outdoor information that makes this map particularly useful.
The legend changes with scaleThe legend changes with scale
Topografisk webbkarta combines information from several sources and changes its presentation by scale. Lantmäteriet's legend shows separate examples around 1:10,000, 1:20,000, 1:50,000, 1:100,000, 1:250,000, and 1:800,000. Some information does not appear in every scale range.
Zoom in before deciding that a trail, building, wetland, restriction, or minor place name is absent. Contour intervals and the visual emphasis of roads and boundaries also change. The official legend example nearest your current scale is the right one to consult.
At the closest app zoom levels, Lokimaps enlarges the most detailed source tile. This makes symbols easier to see but does not reveal additional objects. Lantmäteriet says the downloadable raster is updated every three months. Lokimaps refreshes its synchronized copy separately, so a newly revised official legend can precede the corresponding tiles in the app.
Contours, mountains, and ground coverContours, mountains, and ground cover
Contour lines show the shape and steepness of the ground. Tight spacing means a steep slope and broad spacing means gentler terrain. The current legend specifies a 5 m vertical interval around 1:10,000, 5 m around 1:20,000 except 10 m in mountain areas, 10 m around 1:50,000, and 25 m around 1:100,000. These are examples for the stated scale, so first match the app view to the nearest legend section. Measured height points and triangulation stations provide spot elevations.
Land-cover fills distinguish coniferous and deciduous forest, subalpine birch forest, alpine tundra, open land, arable land, orchards, and developed areas. Wetland patterns distinguish firm from wet marsh. Glaciers have their own fill and contours. These classifications are useful planning context, but they do not report current snow, ice, flood, vegetation density, or surface conditions.

The road hierarchy runs from motorways and main roads through small country roads and local streets. Separate line styles identify tractor tracks, park or cycle ways, footpaths, illuminated tracks, tunnels, and railways. Symbols can also mark barriers, turning places, rest areas, bridges, fords, ferries, lifts, pipelines, and power lines.
Do not infer permission or condition from line weight alone. A mapped road or path may be private, seasonally closed, unmaintained, or unsuitable for your mode of travel. Match the exact symbol in the legend, then check current local rules.

The official legend distinguishes several route types that can look similar at first glance:
- Marked summer trails.
- Combined summer and winter trails.
- Marked winter trails.
- Snowmobile routes, including categories with different regulatory meanings.
- Recommended but unmarked routes and paths that may be difficult to follow.
- Reindeer routes, fences, and corrals.
- Boat or rowing passages and places where equipment may need to be carried.
Use the exact legend entry before following a dashed route across mountain terrain. A line on the map does not guarantee visible markings, a maintained surface, safe ice, a bridge, or suitable weather.

Topografisk webbkarta has specific symbols for facilities such as mountain stations or lodges, tourist cabins, rest cabins, lean-tos, Sami cots, camping and bathing places, parking, guest harbours, emergency telephones, and rescue facilities. Bridges, footbridges, and fords use different symbols.
These point symbols help with orientation and planning, but the map does not guarantee opening hours, booking availability, drinking water, emergency supplies, or current condition. Confirm critical facilities with their operator.
Water, shorelines, and hazardsWater, shorelines, and hazards
Water symbols cover shorelines, diffuse shores, streams, ditches, rapids, waterfalls, dams, locks, flow direction, jetties, quays, rocks, shoals, and depth values. Some fine hydrographic details appear only at close scales. The topographic map provides useful coastal and inland-water context, but it is not an approved nautical chart.
Buildings, landmarks, and cultural featuresBuildings, landmarks, and cultural features
At close scales, the map distinguishes individual buildings and broader built-up areas. Point symbols identify churches, cemeteries, towers, masts, wind turbines, mines, ruins, ancient remains, cultural heritage sites, runways, shooting ranges, sports grounds, and other prominent objects.
Use a landmark symbol to identify a feature, not to assume public access. Historic, industrial, military, and utility sites may be restricted or unsafe.

The legend separates national, county, and municipal boundaries from national parks, nature reserves, wildlife or cultural protection areas, facility areas, military exercise and firing areas, and areas with restrictions on off-road vehicles, camping, or fires.
This distinction matters: an administrative line is not an access restriction, while a protected or prohibited-area boundary may require you to check current regulations. Boundary information on a background map can also lag temporary decisions and local notices.

- Zoom to the level at which you will plan or travel.
- Decide whether the mark is terrain, transport, water, a facility, or a boundary.

- Verify current access, closures, fire restrictions, trail conditions, and facility status with the responsible authority or operator.
The official legend is versioned and dated because the map style changes. Prefer the current Lantmäteriet document over an older paper-map key or third-party symbol list.
